The
Tsunami Disaster: make
a donation on line for SE Asia !
AVSI has immediately set in action to meet the needs of the
populations swept through by the surging waters of the Indian Ocean
tsunami, last December 26. Thus a number of relief activities are being
planned in collaboration with local Apostolic Nuncios: first of all in
Thailand, in the Dioceses of Surat Thani, (where the town of Pukhet is
located), one of the areas most seriously affected by the tsunami, in
collaboration with H.E. Monsignor Salvatore Pennacchio (Apostolic Nuncio
in Thailand) and in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with H.E. Monsignor
Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio in this country:
The procedure we are going to follow originates from the
awareness that emergency relief activities should constitute the
starting point towards development. This is how we use to behave in
cases of humanitarian emergency. In this specific case we shall operate
as follows:
1. to collect and examine the requirements of our local
partners in Thailand and Sri Lanka, and define the relevant priorities;
2. to send experts to these countries on assessment missions;
3. based on actual needs and funds available, to draw and implement a
project in collaboration with local partners;
4. to prepare a medium-term project in order to promote
resumption of normal activities (schooling, work) and to help the minors
affected by the disaster, also by means of the distance support program.
We shall keep our numerous and generous donors informed and
updated on the use of funds
Everybody understands that, at this stage, a hasty
intervention would only meet our need, not the needs of the people
affected by the disaster. This is the reason why AVSI confirms its
commitment to support the populations swept through by the Indian Ocean
tsunami by means of a medium-long term project able to last in time,
rather than through emergency actions.
AVSI (www.avsi.org) is a not for profit, non governmental
organization (NGO) founded in 1972 to implement development cooperation
projects. AVSI is presently active in 35 developing and transition
countries in the areas of health and sanitation, care of children in
difficult conditions, education, vocational training, upgrading of
informal urban areas, environment, agriculture, promotion of small
businesses , food security and emergency relief.
During the last ten years AVSI implemented in these
countries distance support projects, by which it it is presently able to
help over 24.000 children and adolescents. Thank to a limited
contribution (85 cents of Eur per day for at least one year), donors may
provide children with sufficient food, healthcare and sanitation, as
well as schooling, so that they may become the real protagonists of
their future.
